DeepSeek + Cline: A Low-Cost AI Coding Setup

2 min read

If you use AI regularly for coding, API costs can add up quickly. One option that stands out for its pricing is DeepSeek.

DeepSeek provides API access on a pay-as-you-go basis, so instead of paying a fixed monthly subscription, you pay for the tokens you actually use. Its current V4 lineup includes DeepSeek-V4-Flash and DeepSeek-V4-Pro, with Flash being the more budget-friendly option.

At the time of writing, DeepSeek-V4-Flash costs $0.22 per 1M input tokens (cache miss) and $0.66 per 1M output tokens during off-peak hours, with peak-hour rates being higher. Cached input is significantly cheaper.

This makes it particularly interesting for developers who want to use an AI coding agent without committing to an expensive monthly plan.

How to Get Started

The basic setup is quite simple:

1. Create a DeepSeek account

Go to the DeepSeek Platform and create an account.

2. Create an API Key

Open the API Keys section, create a new key, and copy it somewhere secure. The key is shown only when it is created.

3. Add Credits

DeepSeek API usage works on a balance system. You add credit to your account, and the API charges are deducted based on your actual token usage.

You don’t need to buy a traditional “monthly API subscription”—it’s essentially top-up and pay for what you use.

Using DeepSeek in VS Code with Cline

Once you have the API key, the next step is connecting it to Cline, an AI coding assistant that runs directly inside VS Code.

Install the Cline extension from the VS Code Extensions marketplace and open its settings.

In Cline, you can select DeepSeek as the API provider, enter your DeepSeek API key, and select the model you want to use.

If the required DeepSeek model is not available in the provider’s model list, Cline also supports OpenAI-compatible providers, allowing you to enter DeepSeek’s API endpoint manually.

The basic configuration is:

API Provider: OpenAI Compatible
Base URL: https://api.deepseek.com
API Key: Your DeepSeek API key
Model ID: deepseek-v4-flash

DeepSeek officially provides an OpenAI-compatible API endpoint, which is why this setup works with tools such as Cline.

Why This Setup Is Useful

The combination is simple:

DeepSeek → Provides the AI model and API Cline → Connects that model to VS Code You → Give the task and review the changes

Cline can read your project, modify files, run commands, and work through tasks iteratively. That makes DeepSeek’s relatively low API cost more useful than simply using it as a normal chatbot.

For developers who do a lot of coding with AI, this setup can be a practical way to keep costs under control while still getting an agent directly inside VS Code.

One important point: API prices can change, and DeepSeek introduced peak/off-peak pricing in August 2026, so it’s worth checking the official pricing page before adding a large balance.
